The Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS) staged their 4th Annual Merits Awards Day on 17 December 2011 at the St. Mary’s Senior Citizens Center. The students led the planning and presenting of the program. Giselle Galam and Franz Galam presented a short skit about how Filipino-Australians celebrate Christmas in Australia. Aminah Angkaya, Cohen Bosworth, Michael Cunanan and Alexis Lomigo delivered speeches. It was evident that these students have progressed in their learning of the Filipino language and have appreciated demonstrating their Filipino heritage through their dance and singing performances at community events.

Tanya Davies MP, State member of Parliament for Mulgoa and Penrith City Councillor Prue Guillaume graced this significant occasion. They congratulated the hard work of the students as well as the PCFS staff towards bringing Filipino culture to the community.

The PCFS looks forward to more exciting developments in 2012. Scholarship with free tuition will be offered to new migrants aged 7 to 11 years old. A language program for adults will also be offered in February 2012. For further information, please email PCFS at plcaa.inc@gmail.com

PLCAA in the mood for Christmas

The Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) held its annual “Pasko na Naman” (PNN) on 26 November 2011 by inviting the community to join a Filipino Christmas celebration through music and dance. Rain did not dampen the spirit of Filipinos who delivered their gift to the community despite bad weather.

Crowds gathered for a joyful celebration at the familiar St. Mary’s Senior Citizens Center (SMSCC) after a last minute change of venue from Coachman’s Park in Queen Street. Children arriving with their exchange gifts and wondering where Santa Claus was spurred on the setting up of the hall and stage. The SMSCC was transformed to create an atmosphere of gift-giving, joy, peace and love. The creativity of stage artist Lionel Laserna assisted by the witty logistics team of Dodee Leones, Alan Candelario and Larry Capco delighted PNN Master of Ceremonies Maya Ibarra and Program Chairperson Danny Rosales who were both ready to start a program of great performances.

Philippine Consul Marford Angeles graced the event together with wife Joanne, Federal Member David Bradbury MP with his two children, Councillors of the Penrith City Council – Councillors Jackie Greenow, Kevin Crameri, Kathryn Presdee and John Thain, community leaders Jules Sanchez of Sydney Australian Filipino Seniors Inc and Jun Relunia of Philippine Australian Seniors of Sydney Inc . PLCAA ‘s very own performers: PLCAA Glee Club, PLCAA Cultural Dancers, PLCAA Line Dancers , Filipino Cultural Heritage Youth Camp ( FCHYC) Dancers and the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS) students were joined by talented Filipino-Australians: Rie Manaloto, Clarissa Bock, Genesis Cerezo, Bobby Harrison, Malou Lambert, Faye Laserna, Isabelle Montillano, Princess and Alana de Leon, rappers Jamel & Chriz, Olivia & Bridget Bosworth and the awarded Sydney Sonata Singers.

The unsolicited throwing of gold coins “Paagaw” by Des Belangue was a big surprise. Everybody, young and old, scrambled down on the floor to grab those rolling coins. One girl repeatedly shouted “Merry Christmas” while showing a total of $5 coins she got for nothing. Afterwards, Santa Claus appeared on the stage with his gifts and the crowd hurried to get their own reindeer horns. It felt like one big family celebrating in the real spirit of Christmas. “Pasko Na Naman” has made itself the “family of the community” for Christmas celebrations.

After the hectic preparation and execution of PNN, the PLCAA still had the energy to carry out “Carols on Wheels”. The PLCAA Glee Club, joined by the private group known as the Golden Girls, visited Mountainview Nursing Homes in Penrith and Kingswood Aged Care Facility on 10 December 2011 to give cheers and joy through their music and dancing. Listening to Christmas Carols gave great delight not only to the residents but also to the staff many of whom could not resist joining in by singing or humming. It triggered a feeling of togetherness and gladness in the celebration of Christmas. A cultural dance performance has always been a welcome feature at Christmas presentations in nursing homes. The PLCAA Cultural Dancers performed Pandanggo sa Ilaw. The Golden Girls uplifted the mood with their modern dancing that led to the entire Carols on Wheels crew ending the presentation with line dancing and community carol singing. PLCAA will always heed to the call to celebrate Christmas and share joy, peace and love in the spirit of the season.

Well, it was another fantastic adventure as the FCHYC for 2011 kicked off! This year's camp was held at Camp Kedron, Ingleside on the 28th, 29th and 30th of January. This was yet another wonderful experience for the youth to learn about their heritage and really develop a sense of pride for their culture. The theme for the FCHYC 2011 was “Noon, Doon, Dito, Ngayon” translating to “Then, There, Here, Now”.

A pre-camp was organised prior to the camp and took place on the 23rd of January at Ridge Park Hall, Woodlands Avenue, Oxley Park. The pre-camp was definitely a fun-filled day. We were split up into our camp groups and had to work together to prepare various Filipino dishes. Well, I saw a lot of masterchefs that day! We participated in countless more activities establishing a sense of teamwork, cooperation and most importantly, a sense of friendship! It was an absolutely an exciting day and one I'm sure everyone will remember favourably.

On the 28th on January we all met up at the St. Mary's Senior Citizen's centre, eagerly lugging our bags to the bus, ready to get going! With a wave goodbye to our parents, we were off! The bus ride was enjoyable in itself, laughing, chatting and singing the moments away drawing ourselves closer to the great adventure ahead!

We arrived at the campsite, dumped our luggage in our cabins and went out to explore the camp grounds. A sports centre, cafeteria, recreational room....this place had everything! We then all met up in the conference room to formally begin the camp.

The days flew by all too quickly and we all found ourselves recalling the past events. We played the traditional Filipino games of sipa, Filipino jumping rope and soccer, competing in our teams to see who could claim victory. It was thrilling! We curled up and listened to spooky Filipino ghost stories and got the scare of our lives! We then had to bring out our creativity and design our own model jeepneys. All I can say is, we have some amazing artists out there! All the jeepneys looked awesome! There's just no other way to describe how great they were!

In our teams, we presented the traditional tribal dance, “Ati-Atihan” putting our own modern and unique twist to it. We also presented short skits on what life was like in the Philippines back then, and what life is like in Australia now regarding courting, clubbing, discipline, communication and transport. And let's not forget the all important talent night! We sat and watched cheering on each other as we got up and presented our talents. There were amazing singers, gifted guitarists, stunning magicians, hilarious skits and the list goes on! It was a camp filled with nothing but fun!
To end camp, we jumped into the bus and zoomed straight to the beach which was conveniently only ten minutes away! Blue skies, a picnic lunch and a bucket load of sunscreen made it a marvellous day to spend at the beach. We relaxed, played around in the sand and splashed about in the water. It was definitely the PERFECT way to end the FCHYC 2011.

This year's camp was SPECTACULAR! It was an absolutely amazing new adventure that I know I will remember forever! We all took away with us a better understanding of our culture and a better understanding of who we are as Filipino- Australians. I know that we all learnt something new at the FCHYC 2011, whether it be having learnt how to play sipa or how to dance the Ati-Atihan, I know for sure, that this was a great experience. We are blessed to have been given the opportunity to attend this camp. To all the people who made it possible, the staff of PLCAA, the parents, the volunteers and the people who helped fundraise, thank you all so much. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Thank you for your support, hard work and effort. This was such a memorable camp and I encourage you all to join us next year!

Tears of joy, faces smiling, tapping feet and clapping hands were inspiring momentsfor the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) who kept the Carols on Wheels rolling this Christmas season.

Carols on Wheel, with the able leadership of Maya Ibarra, became a PLCAA tradition aimed to bring cheers, peace and joy to the residents of nursing homes and to the isolated elderly in their private homes. It brings an atmosphere of sharing the joy of Christmas in a spirit of festive celebration through songs and dances.

The PLCAA Glee Club in 2008 has provided an applauded entertainment and fellowship to the Kingswood Court Aged Care Facility (KCACF) in Kingswood, NSW.

The group did not only sing Christmas carols but overwhelmed the residents with their dancing skills which included a popular Hawaiin dance, line dancing and the Filipino “Papaya” dance. To our surprise, the elderly residents started to dance while seated . Those who can manage to come forward threw some popular dance steps like cha-cha and waltz with the glee club performers. Some residents even took the microphone and sang their favourite pieces.

There was a great audience participation till the end of the program followed by a sumptuous refreshment. It was a moment of joy for the PLCAA Glee Club to experience and witness how much delight they have delivered to the hearts of these aged residents.

They did not hesitate to return in 2009 despite their hectic schedules and even extended this yuletide service to the residents of the Mountainview Aged Care Facility ( MACF) in Penrith.Combined with the warm and caring assistance of the nursing staff of these aged care facilities, Carols on Wheels has always been a memorable activity by the PLCAA Glee Club.

Eldely frail individuals who are kept home and unable to attend social functions were added in the list of beneficiaries of this wonderful community service for the Christmas season. The awesome performances and audience participation were valued by the beneficiaries of this wonderful Christmas gathering.

The PLCAA Glee Club gave special thanks to the KCACF Director of Nursing Frances Smith and KCACF Deputy Director of Nursing Maurene Brown who have recognised the eagerness of PLCAA in delivering Christmas cheers to their aged residents. Special thankswent to MACF Michael Heckenberg Facility Manager Michael Heckenberg and MACF Recreational Therapy Manager Daryl Neal who also appreciated the efforts of the PLCAA Glee Club in sharing the joy of the Christmas season.

Carols on Wheels will keep on rolling fuelled by the joy it brings to the elderly. Here we come again this 2010. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year.

GIFT-GIVERS CAME TO TOWN ( PENRITH )

Filipinos celebrate Christmas in a festive setting leaving no room for Scrooges. PASKO NA NAMAN is an annual variety show to encourage everyone to sway to the tunes, try a few dance steps on the floor, clap with glee, and shout Merry Christmas to all. It is a volunteer community celebration including seasoned musical artists and dancers with performers of all ages and backgrounds.

Performers offered their talents and skills as gifts to the community. Christmas cheer was truly present. We thank all the performers and organisers for being true ‘Gift Givers’ at this PASKO NA NAMAN 2010: Music enchanted the crowd to dance and sing throughout the day:

-The band BARKADA ni EDGAR featured Edgar Bernal (Owner/Base Guitar/Vocals); Eddie Gutierrez (Lead Guitar); Mila Gutierrez ( Rhythm Guitar/ Vocals); Ailene Pimentel ( Keyboard); Martin Pimentel ( Drums), Mike Pimentel and Ross Rosales (Vocals) which played rock & roll from the 50's, 60's and 70's and OPM favourites. - Australia’s Got Talent Semi-Finalist Bobby Harrison, a regular PASKO NA NAMAN performer, continued to amaze with his favourite tunes Sway and Feliz Natividad. Bobby plays the trumpet, violin, piano, banduria, saxophone, drums, guitar and the euphonium. He is a member of the Schools State Concert, Ensemble Band, Jazz Band.

- Joven & Friends Rondalla, a small group of rondalla players, performed Bahay Kubo to share what they have learnt during Banduria lessons with Master Joven Estigoy.

A sensational display of modern dances and cultural performances that created a nostalgic ambience: - The students of the Penrith Community Filipino School, under the guidance of Principal-Choreographer Marie Bandayrel,performed their Singkil.

- PLCAA Cultural Dancers Aurora Valencia , Bing Valencia , Divina Ibarra, Lionel Laserna, together with Dr. Alexis Leones and Dodee Leones delighted the crowd with their Timawa Dance.

- Award-winning Albert Dimarucut and Brian Lorenz Babon enchanted the crowd with their dynamic Latin dance.

- Rene, Ruth and Friends powered the whole hall with their Bachatta dancing beat. Rene and Ruth Uy regularly teach the group salsa, rumba, cha-cha, rock n roll, new voque and many more styles.

- Tanya Reibel shared her love for dancing with a self-choreographed contemporary jazz number. Tanya is completing Year 12 at St. Marys Senior High School and loves to perform Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and Lyrical.

- The Philippine Community Council of New South Wales rendered their popular Nobody and You Are My Number One dance with impromptu participation by the Penrith City Councillors Greg Davies, Prue Guillaume, Tanya Davies, and John Thain and Sydney Australia Filipino Seniors Inc (SAFSI) President Jules Sanchez, PLCAA President Evelyn Esguerra and PLCAA Immediate Past President Dr. Alexis Leones.

- SAFSI prepared a ballroom dance number and a cultural dance Pandanggo sa Ilaw with President Mr. Jules Sanchez. SAFSI has become an integral part of celebrating Philippine culture.

- A real treat that added glitter to the entertainment was the PLCAA Modern Dancers Marie Bandayrel, Beth Alcantara, Rhoda David, Carol Gill and Imee Summerfield who bounced with sexy moves to Beyonce ‘s Single Ladies.

PASKO NA NAMAN always boasts singing performances of varied styles and tunes: - The students of the Penrith Community Filipino School , under the tutelage of Loy Tagudin, sang Pasko Na Naman as the opening number and Pasko Anong Saya.

- The PLCAA Glee Club sang a popular Christmas carol Noche Buena and the song finale Pasko Na Naman.

- Multi-talented Clarissa Bock, a regular cast of PASKO NA NAMAN, is a member of the Blacktown City Community Band playing the saxophone, piano, clarinet and guitar. She is a finalist of the Filipino Australian Talent Quest and Musical Australian Talent Show.

- Nine-year old Isabelle Montillano delighted everybody with her energetic performance. Isabelle won second prize in the Talent Quest of Agape Christian Church; was the lead singer of the Children Ministry at El Shaddai’s 25th anniversary in the Philippines and won first runner-up at the Young Ambassadors competiton in 2009.

- Joshua Montillano (aka ‘Smooth’) performed his original rap composition to the enjoyment of everybody. He performed an impressive rendition of Eminem and Rihanna’s Love the Way you Lie which he presented at the Emmaus College 2010 Showcase. -Marilyn Mendez was a real trouper . An entertainer and performer, she is no stranger to the stage and her smooth jazzy voice thrilled the audience. . She has gone from Canberra gigs to open shows for bands and big name stars like Al Martino, Cleo Laine, Blood Sweat and Tears, just to name a few. She performed regularly at clubs like the Wentworth Sheraton, The Mandarin Club, and the Bourbon and Beefsteak Bar. She has also performed with jazz aficionados like Col Nolan, George Golla and James Morrison. She has appeared on the Midday Show with Ray Martin; at the Don Burrows Supper Club on the ABC; and has also appeared for the popular Nelson Jazz Festival in NZ. Her recordings have been played on ABC radio and she continues to thrill club audiences around Sydney.

- PLCAA’s very own seasoned performer, Jun Rayco, delighted the audience with an impromptu duet with Marylin Mendez. A known baritone/bass 2 singer, Jun volunteered to promote Philippine culture and heritage through the PLCAA Glee Club. He was a member of the Redemptorist Senior Choir for almost 10 years and sung in the mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in the Philippines in 1981. He was a member of the Metropolitan Theater Chorus (Metchorus Manila) in 1979-1981. He was a member of the Philippine Tourism Chorale in 1982-1987 and performed concert tours in USA West in 1985. Jun formed the Filipino band in Sydney known as the Manila Rhythm Band who performed from 1989-1991. He is a member of the Rondalla choir serving GOD on Sunday masses.

- The charming mother and daughter team, Carol and Catherine Gill, again won the hearts of the PASKO NA NAMAN audience with their passion for Irish and Filipino music and entertainment.. Many thanks to the PLCAA organising committee chaired by Danny Rosales and joined by Marie Bandayrel, Maya Ibarra, Lionel Laserna, Andy Porral, Dodee Leones and Larry Capco for orchestrating a dramatic PASKO NA NAMAN for the community . The stage created an impressive backdrop with decorations, lights and a live band. Our MCs continued to keep up the spirit with Ross Rosales and Maya Ibarra supported by BARKADA’s Dorothy Leones and Mitchel Bandayrel. PASKO NA NAMAN has made a mark in the Filipino community’s annual festivities, being celebrated on the last Saturday of November. PLCAA brings the utmost enthusiasm and ingenuity of its members in providing the best entertainment and Christmas celebration for the whole family.

As MC Ross Rosales emphasised to the crowd “this is PLCAA’s gift to you all”. Penrith City Mayor Cr. Kevin Crameri and Consul Anthony Reyes congratulated PLCAA , all performers and participants for a great entertainment. The food and variety stalls at different corners of the St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre made PASKO NA NAMAN a real Christmas festival.

To all the people who came and celebrated, this festival is yours and will always be. PASKO NA NAMAN will always be remembered and anticipated to be better each year.

SINGKIL : A CULTURAL IMPACT AT PASKO NA NAMAN

For weeks, students of the Penrith Community Filipino School had been learning about the history of the Singkil, a famous dance of the Maranao people. It tells the story of Princess Gandingan and her courage in stepping over fallen trees after an earthquake. The story is reflected in the dance steps of the Singkil.

It was decided that the students would perform the dance and tell the story at the annual Pasko Na Naman celebration at the St Marys Senior Citizens Centre on 27 November 2010. Organising costumes, props and choreography for more than twenty students was a huge task undertaken by the Principal, Marie Bandayrel, and school assistant, Jenny Williams.

Students learnt the dance steps, which were quite complicated and often attended rehearsals during the weeks leading up to the performance. Costumes and props were made by Jenny. These included the king, his guards, the servants of the princess and the elaborate fans and headpiece of the princess herself.

The crowd was taken aback by the entrance of the princess, balancing on two bamboo sticks, followed closely by her umbrella-bearing maid. There was silence as she indicated that the dance was about to start by the stamping of her foot and the symbolic bells of her ankle bracelet. This was followed by the loud crashing of the bamboo sticks. The earthquake had started.

As the princess moved around the sticks, her servants waved fans and moved in time in the background. After each circuit, the sticks stopped and the princess indicated that she was ready to dance again. Each time, the sticks picked up their dangerous pace and increased in volume as the crowd hoped and prayed that the princess would be able to manouevre herself safely around the bamboo.

The dance was very much appreciated by the crowd and it was obvious to everyone that a lot of time and effort had gone into the preparation of the dance.

Congratulations to the teachers, parents and students for such an amazing performance. I’m sure it will be requested again at future celebrations. Well done!

Young Filipino-Australians exhibited their artworks and photography at the Penrith City library from 3 October to 23 October 2010 as part of the Read Philippines Project held by the Penrith City Council and the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia, Inc.

The exhibition was a culmination of the “A Touch of Heritage” funded by the Penrith City Council through its Magnetic Places Community Cultural Grants Program 2009-2010. Young Filipino-Australians, working with parents and mentors, integrated their Philippine cultural heritage with Australian culture to create crafts and visual arts.

The display included:

Paintings by students from the Penrith Community Filipino School featuring the “Sarimanok”, a mythical bird of Mindanao legends . “ Sarimanok” is an icon of Maranao art and a symbol of good fortune.

A Touch of Heritage

"A Touch of Heritage" simply called ATOH is the current project organised by the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) and is funded by the Magnetic Places Community Cultural Grants Program of the Penrith City Council.

Through this project, children and youth of Filipino heritage will bring out their feelings and thoughts on their understanding of Philippine culture. Their talents and skills will be highlighted through their active participation in a series of mentoring workshops. Specialised mentors in areas such as visual arts, music and dance, fashion, sports and games, as well as poetry and literature will assist the ATOH participants in using these different mediums of expression. The outcome of the project is focused on the integration of Australian and Filipino heritage through the eyes of the youth.

St. Marys Corner Community and Cultural Precinct located at 29 Swanston Street, St. Marys corner Great Western Highway and Mamre Road, would be the site of the culminating event for ATOH scheduled on the 15th of May 2010.

This free event will run from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm showing a parade of Philippine fashion with songs and dances by the children and youth participants as the main entertainment. Performances by the multi-awarded Sonata Singers, the promising PLCAA Glee Club, all-seasoned Kayumanggi Dancers, PLCAA Cultural Dancers, Ilongo Dinagyang Connection and the Philippine Cordillerans will add an impressive character to this cultural event

Another exciting feature is the tournament of the game “Patintero” and demonstration of the martial art “Arnis”. There will be stalls that will allow the public to experience Filipino games like “piko”, “sipa”, “sungka” “jackstone”, “trumpo”. Artworks and literature created in this program will be on display. Popular food dishes and delicacies are available for sale. All of these presentations will create an atmosphere of cultural appreciation.

The 15th of May will be a day of fun and celebration of two cultures.

In recognition of the enthusiastic efforts and the impressive progress shown by the students of the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS), the School staff and teachers headed by Principal Marie Bandayrel staged a Merit Awards Day on the 19th of December 2009 at the school site, St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre, St. Marys NSW.

Giselle Galam (secondary class) and Ashley Boughton (primary class) were recognised for their outstanding achievements in the learning of the Filipino language. All students were commendable for their active involvement in community events throughout the year. They performed choral songs and dances of Philippine heritage. They acted as young ambassadors of Philippine culture in the City of Penrith.

His Worship the Mayor of the City of Penrith Cr. Kevin Crameri, Hon. David Bradbury MP and Assistant Consul Raymond Salvana graced the occasion. Multiculturalism, establishing connection with one’s heritage and cultural literacy were emphasised in their speeches .

The students sang the traditional Christmas song “Pasko Na Naman” under the musical tutelage of their choir teacher Loy Tagudin and piano accompanist Elijah Tagudin . The musical solo performances of secondary class student Isabelle Polines and primary class student Catherine Gill were additional highlights of the entertainment.

The Penrith Community Filipino School will continue to provide opportunities for these young Filipino-Australians in the learning of the Filipino language and knowing their Philippine heritage.

The Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA )has found itself embracing positive and encouraging messages from the different events the organisation has participated. t is well known that PLCAA upholds the value of using the Filipino Language as it promotes increased awareness of Philippine cultural heritage. This is achieved through the operations of the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS), a Saturday Language School in St. Marys and through the musical performances of the PLCAA Glee Club , both managed by the PLCAA .

On the 5th of September 2009, PCFS Principal Marie Bandayrel and PLCAA President Dr. Alexis Leones attended for the first time the Annual Dinner of the NSW Federation of Community Language School (NSWFCLS) at Club Marconi, Bossley Park as a gesture of showing its commitment in the delivery of language education. The event was attended by a great number of dedicated community language teachers who shared their experiences with each other. This significant occasion was graced by the presence of the Consul-General of different countries including our very own Vice Consul Anthony Reyes. The highlights of the program included the dance performances of students from the Hindi, Indian and Vietnamese community language schools with the awarding of prizes to student -winners of different competitions . “Next year, our PCFS students will showcase our popular Philippine dances in this prestigious gathering”, Principal Bandayrel said with much enthusiasm and with the combined agreement of Vice Consul Reyes and Dr. Leones.

On the 19th of September 2009, the PLCAA Glee Club performed at the Feast of Our Lady Of Penafrancia, an annual event organised by the Australian Devotees of Our Lady of Penafrancia (ADOLP) at the Tench Reserve, Jamisontown along Nepean River. The PLCAA Glee Club with their song performances of ” Hahabol- Habol” and “ Manila” triggered happy feelings of festive cultural celebration which spiced the Philippine hospitality shown by the host organisation. Once again, the Glee Club performers contributed to ADOLP’s commitment to hold this traditional sacred feast. PLCAA Vice President Evelyn Esguerra commented that “ this is a feast that PLCAA is happy to participate every year not simply because it is a feast but a religious tradition of the Philippines. The host was accommodating with plenty of free food and drinks catered to everyone. A good weather contributed to a well celebrated feast”. Choir Master Maya Ibarra expressed agreement and said “we will always be there for Mama Mary”.

On the 10th of October 2009, Marie Bandayrel and Dr. Leones participated at the NSWFCLS Annual Conference at Epping Boys High School with workshops that covered a large range of topics for teachers and school administrators. About thirty community language schools were represented and created an environment of fellowship among the 400 participants. All ethnic schools were asked to sing the Birthday Song in their own languages for Federation’s President Mr. Albert Vella who was celebrating his birthday on this day. Joined by the teachers of the Waratah Filipino School, Marie Bandayrel took this opportunity to teach the participants to sing in Filipino. It was of much delight seeing the assembly sing in Filipino especially the Greek and Samoan teachers . Mr. Vella showed much joy in his special day being with people who shared the same passion for language education through community schools. “The conference made us realised that a community language school such as PCFS is the key site where cultural, linguistic and identity issues should be sorted out for all generations. Our children deserves not only a good curriculum for better education and future employment opportunities but to have the experiences in the celebration of their cultural heritage”, Dr. Leones said.

Penrith City Council in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney and in cooperation with the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) present a display of Filipiniana items at the Penrith City library from the 20th to the 30th of September 2009. A Read Philippines Project, this exhibit showcases the people, history, art and crafts of the Philippines to provide a visual understanding and appreciation of this rich culture.

Included in the display are:

· Miniature Philippine Jeepneys, models of the Filipino innovation on the United States Army combat vehicle. The converted military vehicle became the Philippines most-used public transportation vehicle after World War II. Today, the jeepney is the most popular means of transportation in the Philippines.

· “Ice Cream on Wheels” is how best to describe the Philippine Sorbetes. Usually there are about four ice cream flavors inside the ice cream carriage. The “Sorbetero” or ice cream man, peddles his delicious ice cream from street to street all day. You can have it scooped on a cone or served in a bun as an ice cream sandwich.

· A collection of stamps from 1950, 1960 and 1970’s, postcards featuring Philippine dances, Philippine coins and bills.

· Sungkaan, a wooden board used in the traditional Filipino game of Sungka.

· A Native Bag woven from Pandan leaves. Pandan weaving, a traditional art that flourishes in Negros, is a craft that has been practiced even before the coming of the Spaniards. The skill has been handed down from generation to generation.

· Paintings by artist Maria Garbo which features the Sarimanok, the mythical bird of the legends of Mindanao. The Sarimanok is an icon of Maranao art and a symbol of good fortune.

Dual Citizenship made easy at St Marys

The Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) in partnership with Marikina Association of Sydney Australia (MASA) held a forum on Dual Citizenship and Overseas Absentee Voting on 18 July 2009 at the St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre, St. Marys.

Vice Consul Anthony Reyes encouraged Filipino-Australians to enjoy the “best of two worlds”. He highlighted the rights of a dual citizen in the Philippines: the right to practice one’s profession or occupation; the right to own properties, make investments and engage in business; the right to stay permanently in the Philippines; and the right to vote.

MASA’s Vice President Fidel Zaballa expressed the fact that he is an Australian citizen by choice and while enjoying his life in Australia, he remains a Filipino by heart and soul. “Nobody can take my being Filipino from me”, he says. “The opportunity of re-acquiring my rights as a Philippine citizen is a great bonus for me”.

The forum generated many questions and interests regarding rights that are regained with dual-citizenship. Popular questions included taxation laws, acquisition of properties, travel tax, dependents being dual citizens and use of Philippine passports. More than one third of the participants expressed their intentions to become dual citizens at the end of the forum. PLCAA Board Director Eric Ruiz acted as the facilitator of the forum.

Vice Consul Anthony Reyes indicated that the Philippine Consulate is making their services accessible to the Filipino-Australians in different areas of New South Wales through scheduled visits. Applicants for dual citizenship should complete the application by 15 August 2009 in order to be eligible to vote in the 2010 Philippine Presidential and Senatorial election.

The Philippine Consulate General in Sydney will process applications for dual citizenship on Saturday, 1 August 2009, from 10:00 am till 12:00 noon at the St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre, corner Great Western Highway and Mamre Road , St. Marys (entry via driveway at the back of the Don Bosco Youth Centre).

Applicants should bring all the required documents, completed application forms and the fee payment of ninety dollars (AU$90). Further information on dual citizenship can be found at http://www.philippineconsulate.com.au/

The Philippine Cultural Day was held on the 2nd of May 2009 at Coachman's Park St, Marys. It was presented by the Philippine Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA) and was made possible through the funding of the Penrith City Council Magnetic Places Community Cultural Grants Program.

The objectives of the Philippine Cultural Day was to celebrate and share the rich Philippine heritage to the community.

The Philippine Cultural Day became a reality with about 1,000 people who came and witnessed the event through the combined efforts of members and friends of the PLCAA, with its partners:

A good start: Filipino Cultural Heritage Youth Camp

Twenty-two Filipino-Australian youth ventured in the cultural immersion program, the Filipino Cultural Heritage Youth Camp, held on 2-4 January 2009 at Camp Fletcher, Hazelbrook NSW. The youth were inspired by the camp theme of “Amazing Philippines – Know and Tell” and poem “Bakit Tayo Naririto”.

The camp was organised by the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA), assisted by the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS) staff and supported by the Philippine Community Council-NSW (PCC-NSW). The majority of the youth aged 10 to 22 years of age, are students of the PCFS and members of BARKADA, the Penrith Filipino youth group.

Participants enjoyed the fellowship created with the tasks given and appreciated the use of Filipino language in common expressions, in songs and in real-life contexts. The youth made use of their artistic and creative skills as they took part in the musical production, Philippine dances and costumes, Filipino cooking, Pinoy games and powerpoint presentations. The camp’s interactive program made the youth experience leadership and effective group dynamics in achieving their tasks.

Mr. Neil Galang who is the PCC-NSW Vice President External, Management Committee member of the Western Sydney Multicultural Inc., and the treasurer of the Blacktown City Local Government Committee of the ALP was the guest speaker. Neil being an effective lobbyist encouraged the youth to take active roles in the community and be proud of their Filipino heritage as they share this rich culture with the community.

A tiring but rewarding experience filled with fun activities, this first Filipino cultural heritage camp is an inaugural undertaking by PLCAA who promises a second camp in 2010 for the benefit of the young Filipino-Australians and the community at-large.

With the encouraging and constructive feedback handed in by the youth camp participants, the second camp is envisaged to be interesting and challenging.

The 2009 Youth Camp will be run by the Staff of the Penrith Community Filipino (PCFS) and volunteers from the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA). Parents are welcome to serve as volunteers.

Participants in the 2009 Youth Camp will gain cultural appreciation and an understanding of Philippine values and traditions. They will be equipped to be camp volunteers in future Philippine heritage youth camp if interested.

Teresa Garbo's Paintings

Maria Teresa Garbo - Graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising from Technology University of the Philippines,Manila. A freelance artist and painter, illustrator for school materials and has participated in painting competitions.

A Sydney based Filipino artist, paints in a pointillist manner, building up overlapping layers that allows portions of the underpainting to show through. Picking up from Australian aboriginal art, he applies small dots of paint in bright primary colours.

He was the 1997 and 1999 First Prize winner of the Panthers Annual Australian Day Art Competitions. He won the commission as the migrant artists who interpreted the "Journey of Blacktown" for the State rail Authority, a large mural on display at the Blacktown Bus/Rail Interchange.

Sonata Seniors' Group

Sonata Senior's Group was initially an informal group who willingly represented various senior citizens organizations. Under the direction of their choirmaster, Loi Tagudin, they are now formally known as Sonata Seniors Group and are representing SAFSI, Sydney Australian-Filipino Seniors Inc.

PASKO NA NAMAN is a Tagalog Christmas carol that captures the exuberance of the Philippine Christmas season. Christmas is recognised as one of the longest festive season in the world. Pasko Na Naman was the theme of the Christmas celebration held last November 29 at the St Marys Senior Citizens Centre, and went from 10:00 am to 5:30pm.

The Pasko Na Naman event was based on its namesake – a celebration of the talent, ability, genius and musical forte that burst forth scintillatingly during the four-hour musical programme. The various performers included: Alyssa Esguerra, Bobby Harrison, Clarissa Bock, Divine Kids Inc., Donelle Nepomuceno, FCF Quartet, Ilonggo Dinagyang Connection Australia, Jeanette Sampana (FCA), Kayumanggi Dancers, La Union Dance Group, Michael Cunanan, Penrith Filipino Community School, Penrith Youth Live Band, PLCAA Glee Club, SJ Gonzaga, Rene & Ruth Uy and Friends, Sonata Seniors’ Group, Wahema and Youthlife. These performers unselfishly shared their time and talents, much to the appreciation of the wider community.

The event was graced by the presence of honoured guests: Philippine Consul-General Maria Theresa Lazaro, Mr David Bradbury MP, Mayor Jim Aitken, PLCAA Adviser Mr Pat Sheehy , Cr. Greg Davies and Cr.John Thain. A warm wish of a better year for the Filipino-Australians and continuous active participation in the community was emphasised in their Christmas messages.

Pasko Na Naman was also fortunate to be able to feature works of art from established artist Jun Caingat and up-and-coming artists Maria Teresa Garbo, Adrian Leones, David Lindaya and Marikit Santiago.

There were stalls for clothes, shoes, jewellery, trash & treasure, as well as stalls to feed the hungry with a cornucopia of Filipino goodies – sans rival, sago’t gulaman, turon, biko, dinuguan at puto, kuchinta, adobo, sinigang, pancit malabon, mini-cupcakes at kung anu-ano pa! The fellowship among the patrons around the dining tables was a scene reflective of Filipino hospitality and tenacity.

The day continued with surprises during the door prize draws and the happy crowd joining in the singing of ‘Pasko Na Naman’ till the last tune culminated the event.

For a debut effort, the Pasko Na Naman celebration received very positive feedback from guests and performers alike. The clamour is building…..PASKO NA NAMAN in 2009!

The 2nd Invitational Golf Open Tournament “Charity Event 2008” hosted by GOLF PAR-e Social Club was held at Springwood Golf Club on Sunday, 12 October 2008.

Richard Hayes was declared as the overall winner of the tournament in the game of Individual Stableford . He received the Perpetual trophy, an Annual trophy and a $200 Dinner Voucher donated by Ed Manlapid of Le Colonial Restaurant located in Blacktown and in Castle Hill.

During the awarding of prizes to 26 more winners of the open tournament , an auction of a Tiger Woods signed-golf glove created a lot of cheerful applauses for the bidders . This memorabilia was solicited by Mon Barcelon, an active member and supporter of the club. The highest bid was awarded to Ed Manlapid, also a proud supporter of the club. On behalf of the board members, the President of the club Roger Samson thanked all those players who gave cash donations to these worthwhile endeavour.

The proceeds will be donated to the Penrith Filipino Community School in Western Sydney under the auspices of the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia, Inc (PLCAA). This event was proudly supported by the Australian Institute for Commerce and Language (AICL) and the Western Sydney Business Consultants (WSBC).

PLCAA Family Fun Walk

With a weather forecast of a thunderstorm and seeing a drizzle early morning of the 4th of October 2008, a shower of phone calls was pouring from eager participants confirming whether the PLCAA Family Fun Walk will go on.

With our golfers Albert Ibarra, Andy Porral and Dodee Leones confirming a good weather, the optimistic organisers headed to the Tench Reserve near Factory Road, Penrith.

The registration desk manned by Chiqui Desphy , Leticia Cunanan, Marie Bandayrel and Divina Ibarra were ready to accept registrants by 7:30 am. The first batch of walkers were warmly welcomed to this much-awaited event. These included Sean Desphy, Elvie Williams, Mitzi de Vries, Josie Bettini, Teri Carey, Lety Cunanan, Vic Carino, Divina Ibarra, Dodee Leones, Evelyn Esguerra and Jun Esguerra.

At 8:30 am, they marched forward as a team with no intentions of competing for prizes at stake during the walk. They were like children having fun, walking together towards the chain of walkstations positioned strategically at the 3.5 km walkcourse along the Nepean River. James Desphy, Lenny Barretto & Jinno Roldan as marshalls at the first station not only guided the walkers to the right direction but cheered and wished them well for a good walk. Next the walkers were sighted by Marie Bandayrel, the marshall at the second station. With her colourful pink-haired hat, she amusingly announced the time it took the walkers to reach her station. Marie was spared of any bargaining, bribery or any corruption that the walkers could have made. This walk was all meant for fun and be enjoyed. The walkers were regarded as well-wishers for PLCAA to achieve its goals.

Then came Nature’s reward to these walkers as they were greeted by a great number of mulberry trees that lined the pathway. The walkers had a big treat of eating these edible berries. At the other end of the course, walkers cheered at the sight of the Philippine flag hoisted on top of a tree guarded by Nonoy Laserna .They were also greeted with Philippine music played as a gesture of gratitude for completing the walk. These first batch of walkers were oozing with much energy as they returned to the main station. They met the second batch of walkers which included David Bradbury MP, Philippine Vice Consul Anthony Reyes, Rodnor Sadia, Willy Reyes, Andy Porral, Cora Barretto, Bhoy Barretto, Alexis Leones, Ninea Nepomuceno, Malu Roldan, Marjo Villarosa and Natalie Laserna.

At 9:30 am, the second group was ready to have their turn of doing a heroic deed with their joyful walk. David Bradbury with Vice Consul Reyes were already been successful in setting a quick pace for the group having passed the path of Marie Bandayrel’s second station in a matter of less than 5 minutes. They were defeated when the group’s interest was taken by the berries. They paused and could not resist harvesting these delicious berries. The marshals witnessed the delay in the walk caused by the temptation of having a taste of fresh berries. This moment showed how Filipinos can turn the unexpected into a momentous, spectacular experience.

By 10:30 am all the participants were back at the main station and started to enjoy the delicious meal not to mention the ever-popular Filipino style pork barbecue on the stick prepared by Malu Laserna and the tasty “biko” made by Tita Lety. There was much fun having lunch together that the group didn’t mind at all the rain which actually waited till everybody has gathered at the main station. Nature has provided well for PLCAA.

The fellowship continued. Tita Lety did the invocation asking for blessings for all those gathered. Andy in his welcome address expressed how “ Filipinos make the most of what we have” seeing that the rain did not dampen the festivities with everyone enjoying the food and the camaraderie. How much we enjoyed the presence of our guests Rodnor Sadia, Marjo Villarosa, Willy Reyes and the PCC-NSW people: Elsa Collado, Ronaldo Villaver, Ruben Collado and Emma Braceros.

David Bradbury MP in his talk, recognised the tenacity of the Filipinos as a valued asset in achieving community goals. Philippine Vice Consul Anthony Reyes echoed our Philippine Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro’s gratitude in consistently having PLCAA worked with the Consulate in pursuing projects such as the Read Philippines. The role of PLCAA in the promotion of the use of the Filipino language and increased appreciation of one’s Filipino heritage through the operations of the Penrith Community Filipino School was also acknowledged by ConGen Lazaro.

Donelle Nepomuceno entertained the group with her beautiful songs. Games were played and were enjoyed tremendously . Special thanks to Malu Roldan and Nene Castillo in handling the games. The Fun walk raffle winners were Elsa Collado for the first prize of a dinner voucher at Trevi Ristorante in Penrith worth $200; Edna Voros won the golf package of a glove bag with balls and gloves worth $100; and Evangeline Rixon got the 3rd prize of a Tupperware set worth $60. Lots of consolacion prizes were also won.

Diary of a fulfilled Spring Festival Parader

7 a.m. - I woke up, immediately peeked out the window and groaned inwardly…I could see grey clouds and raindrops. The St Marys Spring Festival was already postponed once before (Sept 6) – not again!

9 a.m. – The sky was still a bit dark but it looked like it was clearing over the Penrith way. Hmmm…this reminds me of the Fun Walk. Hope Alexis consulted her golfers on the weather.

10:30 a.m. – Sunshine! Looks like we’re on!

11:00 a.m. – Got to SMSCC and saw PLCAA members, students and friends in various stages of preparation. Alexis sourced Barong Tagalogs, Hats (Salakot, Ginit cowboy hats, rattan summer hats), Kimonas, Baro’t Saya and scarves. There were even colourful flower arches for the little girls. Thank goodness for that – I was able to borrow a costume for the parade!

Once the students were dressed, we herded them into the hall and ran through the parade arrangement. It was almost time to go. Almost, but we still had enough time to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Tita Letty, and grab a few bites of puto and pancit before we all jumped into the cars and headed off to the Jack Jewry Reserve.

12:20 p.m. The Registration Committee assigned us No 15, and advised us to look for our number. That’s simple - we quickly spotted ‘13’ and ‘16’, positioned ourselves right in the middle and waited for the cue.

12.30 p.m. Why are the Dog Obedience group walking away? They were supposed to be behind us. Maybe they know something we don’t know. A quick check with the Registration Desk confirmed that we were still Number 15. Ok then…

12.40 pm Uh-oh! We’re supposed to be somewhere else!!! There were TWO groups – the walkers and those with cars. And we were in the wrong place! With five minutes to go before the parade kicked off, everyone raced madly to our REAL designated spot. Luckily, because of the earlier dry-run, everyone knew their places.

· Giselle and Clarisse proudly led with the banner proclaiming us as part of the Penrith Community Filipino School

· The little girls -Mia Cunanan, Kristine Cunanan and Natasha Banguis in their patadyongs holding on to the flowered arches – so eye-catching that the photographers were immediately drawn to them

· The young boys (Michael, Mark and Franz) looking very spiffy in their Barong Tagalog
· Elsa Collado and Emma Braceros in matching red baro’t saya flanking Cora Barretto in her more formal silver mestiza dress (‘terno’)

The PLCAA members and teachers – Tita Letty, Te Be, and Marie in their colourful Baro’t Saya and matching scarves; Alexis in her deep blue terno, Mitzi de Vries, Josie Bettini and Teri in sparkling kimonos
· Dodee, Sean, Alex and Monica bringing up the rear with the PLCAA banner.

From then on, it was all a blur of memories, with a few memorable ones standing out:

- winding our way I the back streets of St Marys, gearing up as we prepared to turn into Queen Street
- laughing about how we all started to walk to the tempo of the Scottish bagpipers ahead of us!!
- Giselle and Clarisse always being conscious of standing far apart enough so people could read their banner
- Our lovely flower girls holding their arches daintily above their heads, never once faltering even when the flowers started coming loose.

- The young boys trying to keep their distance from the flower girls so that everyone could see how handsome they were
- Tita Letty, Te Be, Marie and I acting as ‘point guard’ for our little ones, making sure they were all safe and walking in line
- Impressed with Bhoy, James and Ronaldo Villaver, positioning themselves strategically to take pictures and videos as we walked
- Waving to MP David Bradbury and listening with pride as PLCAA’s approach was announced
- The children were all models of perfect behaviour – not a single complaint between them!

Once we got to the end of Queen Street, we broke off from the main Parade body and grouped under the shade of a tree. After some rounds of picture-taking and bottles of water to prevent dehydration, we started the short walk back to SMSCC.

Waiting inside was a sumptuous lunch of pancit bihon, pancit palabok, puto, menudo, roast chicken, rice and chocolate cake! Then sometime after lunch, Alexis received a phone call and eagerly shared the news – WE WON! The children were magnificent, and we look forward to an even better parade next year, with rumours of a float hanging in the air!

So…ano pa ang hinintay ninyo? Sali na!

Ice sculpture created by the talented Filipino artists. They have turned a block of ice into an elegant swan, koala and eagle in just about 30 minutes.

Watermelon, butter, taro, turnips, and red raddish are just some of the materials used for carvings and sculptures of a group of Filipino artist who showcased their work at the Coachman Park in St. Marys.

The students of the Penrith Community Filipino School (PCFS) have been introduced to some traditional Philippine games . The kids have a good time playing sipa, luksong lubid, piko, jackstone and sungka. The time went quick and they have fun...
Here are some pictures.

SIPA ( see-pah)
Uses a coin-like object (washer) with colorful threads attached to it. This is then kicked (sipa) into the air by the player as many times as he can without the "sipa" falling on the floor.

PIKO ( pee-koh )
Is similar to hopscotch.

Sungka - The objective of the game is to amass stones or shells in the player's home base (bahay) by continuously distributing the shells around smaller holes until the player runs out of shells to distribute. The person who collects the most shells in his or her bahay wins.

Jackstone

The jacks are scattered loosely into the play area. The players take it in turn to bounce the ball off the ground, then pick up jacks and then catch the ball before it bounces for a second time.

Luksong Lubid (jump rope) - This is another common game played only by girls and boys between the ages of 5 to 15. This is usually played outdoors when the weather is good and indoors during the rainy season.

The kids of today need to spend time in playing such games as this not only preserves our cultural heritage but also helps children develop their physical and psychological skills.

The Australian-Filipino community gave a boost to PLCAA in its recent YOUTH FORUM "SPEAK OUT" on 5th April 2008 at the St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre, St. Marys.This event was supported by the Penrith City Council and was in cooperation with PCC-NSW, Inc.This was in line with the National Youth Week celebration of Penrith with the theme "Shout.Share.Live.Unite".

The Penrith Filipino Youth Action Group named "BARKADA -Pinoy Australian Youth Network" was launched as part of the programme emphasizing the need to promote greater awareness, pride and involvement in the Philippine cultural heritage.

The event's speakers were His Worship Mayor Greg Davies; Philippine Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro; Mr. David Bradbury MP, Federal Member of Parliament for Lindsay;Ms. Marte Tagle, Director of Community Relations Commission; Ms. Erin Chew, known as the Young Woman of the West; and Matthew Alberto, Read Philippines Coordinator in Fairfield and a Graduate Law Student of the University of Sydney.

The youth participants benefited from the talks which dealt on youth leadership and multiculturalism.

The PLCAA has expressed their gratitude to all those who supported the event particularly the PCC-NSW 08, Plaza Filipino, La Union Dance Group, Maharlika,Inc., SAFSI and Golf Par-e Social Club.

It was a successful event that has marked the excitement of PLCAA in pursuing their projects: Read Philippines Project, Penrith Community Filipino School, and the Penrith Filipino Youth Group "BARKADA".

Speak Out - Penrith Filipino Youth Group Forum

The Penrith Filipino Youth Group is holding the first youth forum on Saturday 5 April from 2:00 pm with the slogan "Speak Out" as a celebration of the National Youth Week from April 5 to April 13.

This will be held at St. Marys Senior Citizens Centre Hall, corner Great Western Highway and Mamre Road, St. Marys NSW.

The forum aims to promote:

Speakers will be Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies, Philippine Consul General Maria Theresa , David Bradbury MP, Marte Tagle of the Community Relations Commission, Erin Chew - awardee Young Woman of the Year -Blacktown.

There will be entertainment during the Forum provided by the youth. Forum will finish by 5:00 pm followed by a Fellowship Youth Party till 10 pm.

Penrith City Festival Parade

The participation of the PLCAA, PCC-NSW and its affiliates (Ilocano Association of Australia, Maharlika Inc, La Union Dance Group) and the Philippine Cordillerans NSW gave the people of Penrith a glimpse of the rich Filipino culture.

The beautiful Kayumanggi Dancers, just did not stroll, they danced, thanks to Marie for the parade choreography.

Thanks to Lionel (Joker) and Eric N (Elvis) for really going out of their way to add Hollywood into the mix. We do realize the inconvenience you have to put up with due to sweltering conditions.

PLCAA - an overview

PLCAA is a non profit Australian-Filipino organisation based in Penrith which has been recently formed and it was the events of last year that led to its establishment. In 2007, Philippine Consulate General Maria Theresa Lazaro met with former Mayor Cr. Pat Sheehy to initiate the Read Philippines Project-Penrith. The project aims to inform the Penrith community, in particular those with Filipino ancestry, of the availability for public use of books and other materials related to the Philippine culture in the Penrith City Library.

Dr Alexis Leones was appointed as the Project Coordinator, the project was successfully launched on 29 September 2007 through the efforts of the Penrith City Council and a number of Australian-Filipino volunteers who acted as area coordinators or played the roles during the cultural presentation on that day.

With this success, the PLCAA hopes to continue carrying out the objectives of the Read Philippines Project in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General and the Penrith City Council.

Future Plans of PLCAA for 2008.

Read Philippines Book Presentation- the books donated during the Read Philippines launch will be presented on 16 February at the theatrette of the Penrith City Library. These books will be made available in the community from that day.

PLCAA hopes to launch a Filipino Language School in May to be named the "Penrith Community Filipino School. This will be a Saturday community school of active learning that will conduct lessons on the Filipino language and culture. Face to face teaching as well as lessons in dance, song, arts and crafts, cooking and the use of the Philippine books in the Penrith City Library. We envisage that students will not only be aware of the Filipino culture and heritage but will also help them define their role in the wider community.

A fund-raising event to be called "Nepean Walk " will be organised for the month of June to help finance the needs of the school.

PLCAA hopes to initiate a Penrith Filipino Youth Group, a project designed to encourage active participation among the Australian-Filipino youth in various community activitites especially those organised by the Penrith City Council. The group 's launch will coincide with the Council's National Youth Week. A youth forum that is in line with the Council's theme of "Shout. Share. Live. Unite" will be prepared as the group's start-up activity.

PLCAA will assist in the Philippine Flag Raising Ceremony in June 2008, a project of the Philippine Consulate General, Sydney in partnership with the Penrith City Council.

The PLCAA logo has a story to tell.

The bright golden-yellow sun, is from the Philippine flag, the eight-rayed sun represented the eight provinces that revolted against the Spaniards.

The 7 pointed white Federation star, is from the Australian flag. It has seven points representing the unity of the six states and the territories of the Commonwealth of Australia.

The sun and the star represent two distinct cultures, that of the Philippines and Australia. The red and blue ribbons behind the sun and the star symbolize PLCAA's desire of binding these two cultures together as one.

The logo speaks the aspirations, mission and vision of the PLCAA.

PLCAA would like to thank Adrian Leones for designing the logo and to all PLCAA officers who have contributed their ideas to make this logo possible.

Australia Day - PLCAA Stall

The Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia, Inc. (PLCAA) joined the celebration of Australia Day on 26 January 2008 at the Sydney Regatta Centre, Penrith. Through this stall we were able to continuously promote the Read Philippines Project to the wider community and also gave us an opportunity to show ourselves as part of the Penrith City's rich cultural diversity.

We also had a lot of enquiries about the PLCAA's forthcoming project, the Penrith Community Filipino School, that will open in May 2008. This will be a Saturday community school of active learning that will conduct lessons in Filipino language, Philippine dances, songs, arts & craft, cooking and the use of Philippine books donated thru Read Philippines Project in the Penrith City Library.

The PLCAA stall was decorated with posters showing the different beautiful tourist spots in the Philippines, display of Filipino costumes. We had Sungka Demonstrations and competitions, Philippine Trivia and Bugtungan. The occasion was graced by the presence of Philippine Vice Consul Hon. Ferdinand Victoria.

Orientation Course for New School

Last January 19, Alexis and Marie attended a one day course at the Community Language Center at Ringrose Public School at Greystanes. The course was presented in the Train the Trainer mode so that participants can run the same course for their organisations.

The topics discussed in the orientation course are the following:

Day 1

Management principles for community language schools - it discussed Incorporation Administration, Financial Management, Public Liability, Duty of Care and Worker's Compensation.
DET policies for community language schools- the participants were briefed on the Department of Education and Training policies that affect each school and which policies need to be specifically adapted to each school.

Day 2

Scope and Sequence - this course is for the language teachers, it includes decisions about what is significant and manageable. it also inludes decisions about what is necessary for sequential development of both skills and concepts.
Designing a Unit of work- a course for teachers that will use outcomes based terminology focusing on the areas outlined in the syllabus. The course cover integrated teaching /learning activities.

Ma. Luz Amesbury a new recruit teacher and I attended the Day 2 -January 20 session, we have a very interesting day, we met other teachers who were really passionate and dedicated in imparting their language and culture to the younger generations. They shared their experiences and stories. We met teachers from Cook Island, India, Arabic speaking countries and a Greek lady who have been teaching in a Greek School for 30 years. There were a lot of things to take, it was a hectic schedule, but at the end of the day, we learned a lot and hope to share it with the PLCAA in the days to come.
